The contemporary world we live in is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA). This context demands a high degree of flexibility, resilience, and adaptation. Navigating the rough seas of managing projects in crisis situations—such as pandemics, floods, and conflicts—requires strong leadership.

The Importance of Resilience in Humanitarian Leadership

Leaders and managers in the humanitarian sector face continuous challenges. Rapid, sudden changes and setbacks test their resilience. By integrating the METTA framework into humanitarian leadership, we can foster resilience and effectively lead teams in VUCA contexts.

Understanding the METTA Framework

The METTA framework consists of five key components:

  • Mindfulness encourages awareness of the present moment.

  • Empathy fosters understanding and connection with team members and communities.

  • Trust builds confidence in oneself and in relationships, cultivating a safe environment for discussion and collective decision-making.

  • Transformation focuses on personal and team growth and change.

  • Action emphasizes taking steps toward project goals with calm and confidence.

As a humanitarian leader managing programs in Myanmar from 2016 to 2024, I applied the METTA framework during various crises, including the Rohingya refugee crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mindfulness: Staying Present

Mindfulness is about being at peace with oneself and maintaining calmness. It facilitates internal awareness and decision-making. I set aside daily mindfulness breaks—morning, afternoon, and evening. These moments of clarity lead to conscious decisions rather than rushed ones, which can have serious consequences in a volatile humanitarian context. I practice this before management or project staff meetings. A calm state of mind is essential for achieving conscious outcomes through the METTA framework.

Empathy: Connecting with Others

Empathy involves being fully present through active listening. By observing emotions and body language, and using mindful pauses, I respond thoughtfully. This approach helps me understand what is truly happening in a humanitarian situation. It allows me to meet the needs of staff or community members effectively. Sharing my personal struggles helps others feel less alone. This connection improves communication, reduces conflict, and enhances emotional intelligence.

Trust: Building a Safe Environment

Cultivating trust is crucial for creating psychosocial safety within a team or organization. In a volatile humanitarian context, where lives are at risk, trust becomes even more vital. My leadership journey has shown that trust is built on empathy. Staff members feel safe to share their observations, challenges, and ideas. Open communication strengthens relationships and fosters team cohesion. Following through on commitments builds trust and enhances collaboration.

Transformation: Embracing Change

Transformation involves personal, professional, or organizational growth. It requires embracing change and learning from experiences. For instance, while managing an agricultural rice value chain project in Myanmar, I adapted our approach due to the COVID-19 pandemic and military coup. We shifted from government collaboration to focusing solely on the private sector through a cash-for-work scheme. This transformation allowed us to continue delivering results and benefiting more project participants.

Reflecting on past experiences, I realized that challenges can be opportunities for growth. The willingness to try new things and innovate is essential. We conducted a market assessment study, leading to a successful cash-for-work pilot project proposal. Continuous consultations with stakeholders enhanced the quality of our initiatives.

Action: Taking Steps Toward Goals

Action is the final component of the METTA framework. It emphasizes the importance of taking steps toward building resilience at the organizational, project, or individual level. Creating an action plan is essential. Outline specific steps to address challenges, whether in managing a humanitarian response or personal development. Break tasks into manageable responsibilities, allowing for delegation and accountability.

Staying committed to your action plan is crucial. Consistency fosters resilience and delivers results. Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating achievements boosts motivation and confidence. Practice patience and persistence throughout the process. Consistency leads to results.

The Role of Resilience in Leadership

Based on my experience, the METTA coaching framework is ideal for building the resilience needed in today’s VUCA world. It helps navigate roadblocks and overcome challenges with flexibility while maintaining calmness and presence. Building trust and showing empathy are vital for reaching our goals.

Resilience is not just about bouncing back; it’s also about moving forward. It needs to be replenished regularly. Daily reflections on what worked and what could be improved are key to maintaining balance and energy levels. This practice is essential for avoiding burnout.

In today’s fast-paced world, many believe resilience is infinite. This misconception contributes to high burnout rates among professionals. It’s crucial to recognize that resilience requires ongoing care and attention.

Conclusion: The Path Forward

In conclusion, the METTA framework offers a powerful approach to humanitarian leadership. By integrating mindfulness, empathy, trust, transformation, and action, we can build resilience in ourselves and our teams. This framework not only helps us navigate challenges but also fosters sustainable growth and leadership.

As we move forward, let’s remember that resilience is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the process, celebrate small victories, and continue to learn and grow. Together, we can create a more resilient future.
